It is quite common for parents to beat their children, because they think eating is a good way to make children learn and behave well. One of my neighbors made a very strict demand on his son and scolded him bitterly or smacked(稍帶特定味道) him whenever he was lazy or disobedient(違抗命令的).To justify(辯解) what he did,he said,” spare the rod and ruin the child.”

Actually beating is a violent way of treating children. It does more harm and causes more hurt than good to children’s physical and psychological health. However, beating children is common occurrence(出現(xiàn)) in our life. Many children become disable because their parents hit them too hard. Some lost their hearing and some became lame(跛腳的).Some children develop an internal(內(nèi)在的) hatred(憎恨) for their parents and protest(抗議) by running away from home.Others may become so fearful of their parents that they tremble(發(fā)抖) at the sight of their angry parents.A mother, for example, even went so far as to beat her son to death because she was not satisfied with his study.Likewise(同樣地),it is not unusual that the child murdered(兇殺) his parents because of the extreme contradiction(矛盾) between them. How can children learn and grow healthily under such circumstance(環(huán)境)?

Quite often parents will be torn by pangs(劇痛) of regret(懊悔) and remorse(自責(zé)) after they have beaten their children. They feel very sad in the rest of their lives. But it is already too late. How can they bring their handicapped(有生理缺陷的.) child back to healthy one?How can they relieve(減輕) pains in their children’s heart so easily? We can say beating hurts both children and parents. It is absolutely a bad way to make children learn and behave well.

Exactly speaking, children are also human beings. They have self-respect and should be respected.

this thursday is thanksgiving day. the writer o’henry called it the one day that is purely american. thanksgiving is not a religious holiday. but it has ritual meaning. some americans attend religious services on the day before thanksgiving or on thanksgiving morning. others travel long distances to be with their families. they have a large dinner which is the main part of the celebration. for many americans, thanksgiving is the only time when all members of the family gather. the holiday is a time of family reunion. thanksgiving week is generally one of the busiest travel times of the year. however, experts say this year probably will be different.

on september 11th, thousands of people died when terrorists hijacked airplanes that struck buildings in washington d.c. and new york city. many people now say they are worried about flying on a plane. travel experts say almost 6 percent fewer people will make long trips this thanksgiving compared with last year. many americans who usually visit family and friends by plane are driving shorter distances instead this week. some mental health experts say the attacks have frightened people. they say people feel safer and happier close to home. more than any other holiday, thanksgiving is a celebration of family and home.

many people say that this year they are especially thankful for their families and friends and the good things in their lives. on thanksgiving, people enjoy a long day of cooking, eating and talking. the traditional meal almost always includes the turkey with a bread mixture cooked inside. other traditional thanksgiving food served with turkey are sweet potatoes, cranberries and pumpkin pie. stores are said to sell more food at thanksgiving than at any other time of the year, and many people eat more food at thanksgiving than at any other time of the year. over the years, americans have added new traditions to their thanksgiving celebration. for example, a number off professional and university football games are played on thanksgiving day. some of the games are broadcast on national television.

James Fenimore Cooper, an early American writer, once said, "The Americans are almost ignorant of the art of music." If that was once true, you would never know it today. Most Americans——even those without a musical bone in their bodies——have a favorite style of music. Many people enjoy classical and folk music from around the world. But other popular music styles in America were "made in the U.S.A."

Country and western music lies close to the heart of many Americans. This style originated among country folks in the southern and western United States. Country music tells down-to-earth stories about love and life's hardships. Guitars, banjos and violins——also known as fiddles——give country music its characteristic sound. The home of country music is Nashville, Tennessee——Music City U.S.A. Country music even has its own theme park called "Opryland" where you can enjoy music shows and fun rides. "The Grand Ole Opry," the oldest radio show in the United States, broadcasts country music live from Opryland every weekend.

Jazz music, developed by African-Americans in the late 1800s, allows performers to freely express their emotions and musical skill. Instead of just playing the melody, jazz musicians improvise different tunes using the same chords. The peak of jazz music came in the 1920s, known as "The Jazz Era." This period produced musicians like Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington. These musicians later created the "big band" sounds of the 1930s. Different styles of jazz developed in different cities, such as New Orleans, Chicago, New York and Kansas City. Composer George Gershwin brought jazz into the world of classical music with pieces like "Rhapsody in Blue."
