In your spoken English class, your teacher shows you the following picture. You are asked to describe the picture and explain how you understand it.
In the picture, there stands a tree full of fruit on one side of the stream. Across the stream, a man is trying to reach out on the edge of the band for the fruit with a net attached to a pole. Not far away there is a bridge that can lead him to the tree for more fruit.
The message conveyed in the picture is clear. In pursuing a dream, we might focus on only one say of making it come true, forgetting that there may be alternatives. As indicated in the picture, if the man is willing to look for other possibilities, he can find a better and more rewarding way to achieve his goal. All he has to do is to turn around, cross the bridge and walk to the tree.
A mother bird stays in her nest in a big three, watching her babies flying away. I think she must be very proud of her children, who are able to find their own food now. But she may also feel a sense of loss since they no longer need her day-to-day care as they used to. This picture shows very well the mixed feelings of parents when watching their children grow up. For my parents, things will be much easier. We will set up our family blog to post our photos, journals and audios. Once I leave for college, we can conveniently share our experiences and support each other no matter where we are. Their nest will never be empty.

great books sharpen our minds
great books are those that contain the best materials on which the human mind can work in order to gain insight, understanding, and wisdom.each of them, in its own way, raisestherecurrentbasic
questionswhichmenmust face. because these questions are never completely solved, these books are the sources and monuments of a continuing intellectual tradition.
garl van doren once referred to great books as"the books that never have to be written again. "they are the rare, perfect achievements of sustained ecellence. their beauty and clarity show that they are masterpieces of the fine as well as of the liberal arts. such books are justifiably called great
whether they are books of science, poetry, theology, mathematics, or politics.
the richness of great books shows itself in the many levels of meaning they contain. they lend themselves to a variety of interpretations. this does not mean they are ambiguous or that their integrity is compromised. the different interpretations complement one another and allow the reader to discover the unity of the work from a variety of perspectives. we need not read other books more than once to get all that they have to say. but we can always go deeper into great books. as sources of enlightenment they are inehaustible.
the interest in many good books that are written is limited to a definite period of history. they do not ehibit the universal appeal that results from dealing with the fundamental questions which confront men in all times and places and in a way that men in all times and places can understand. great books, on the contrary, transcend the provincial limits of their origin. they remain as world literature. the ones we are sure are great are the ones men everywhere turn to again and again through the centuries.
With the development of city civilization, family violence seems already went out of our sight. While we are celebrating that kids are not getting hurt in family violence, there is damage way appears. This kind of way will not hurt child physically, but spiritual. We call that soft violence, which means hurting people with words.
I can see that most parents still not understand what does soft violence means, they usually think that beating kids is violence, but soft violence, they have no idea. For instance, most parents would say the word to kids like You have to study hard, or you will not find a good job. And if you dont have a good job, how could you suppose to wait on and support us when we are getting old? does it sound familiar to you? The words like that will cause serious psychological burden to young little kids, and they would study every hard and ignore their health, while they are in the high stress to worry about they will not find a good job, and have no ability to support their old parents, that would become a black sheep.
In the picture, we can see a boy in worn clothes, sitting at a shabby wooden table with a pile of books on it. A weak ray of light came in through a small hole in the wall and he was absorbed in his reading.
This is a well-known story from an ancient Chinese idiom. The boy, being poor, ccfflldn't afford even a candle, so he bored a hole in the wall to "steal" light from his neighbor's house to read at night. The moral of the story is: spare no effort to acquire knowledge and never get discouraged easily no matter how difficult the situation may be.
Of course, things are totally different today. It is not the story itself but what is reflected in the story that counts. Hard work pays off. We should take pains to improve ourselves through learning and get prepared for the future.
Possible version:
Dear editor,
Some years ago, my hometown used to be a beautiful place. Thick trees and green grass could be seen all over the hills. As time went on, people destroyed almost the whole forest to grow more crops. To make matters worse, people let their cattle eat up the grass. So, you can only see wasteland instead of green forests now. As a result, when it rains, the soil is washed down the hills and into the rivers. Strong winds also blow away the valuable soil that lies on the top of the fields. I do hope all the people will take good care of the forests and plant more trees to improve our living conditions.
