Never Be Lost in Your Dream
Never Be Lost in Your Dream
——After Reading
I chose to read the novelthis winter vacation. I did not mean to read this one, because the author is Gustave Flaubert, a Frenchman, so the English version can’t be the original. I think the purpose for which our English teacher wants us to read the English novel is to let us experience what is real English. So reading a French novel in English is the same as reading an English novel in Chinese. I remember one sentence in our English textbook like this: No matter how well a poem is translated, something of the spirit of the original is lost. So is a novel. What a pity that I could not read an English original!
I read the gist of the story when I was in primary school. It is a story of how a beautiful woman dies. Madame Bovary is beautiful but her husband is not handsome and romantic. He is a doctor. He loves his wife with all his heart, but he does not know how to give her the kind of love she wants. Not being satisfied, Madame Bovary starts to find a lover who is both handsome and romantic. And she finds Léon at last. She spends all the money her father and her husband give her on her lover, and lives the kind of life she has always dreamed of, paying no attention to the fact that all the people in town regard her as a vampire. Happy days are always short however. Léon leaves her at last. And her heart breaks in pieces. There is no other way except to die. What a pity that such a beautiful lady dies in such a way!
I hated Madame Bovary so much when I read the gist many years ago, because Monsieur Bovary loves her so much but she treats him in such a rude way in return, in spite of the fact that she used to study in the convent. Each one in the marriage should fulfil the vows they swore at the wedding ceremony. One madame should be staunch to her husband, no matter how boring it is to be with him. Anyway he is the one you chose when you want to get married. That was the opinions I had at that time.
But after reading the novel, I think Madame Bovary has her own embarrassments which are hard to mention, too. Monsieur Bovary only loves her beautiful and distinguished appearance. No one in this family cares about what she thinks. No one asks about her feelings. No one wants to listen to her aspirations. What a lonely lady! The most important thing is that the life after marriage does not answer to her dream. The only feeling she has is disappointing. It is hard for a lady to bear.
Every girl has her own dream, her own ideal marriage life. Let’s look at Madame Bovary’s dream. When she was in the convent, she read some novels. “They were all love, lovers, sweethearts, persecuted ladies fainting in lonely pavilions, postilions killed at every stage, horses ridden to death on every page, somber forests, heartaches , vows, sobs, tears and kisses, little skiffs by moonlight, nightingales in shaky groves, ‘gentlemen’ brave as lions, gentle as lambs, virtuous as no one ever was, always well dressed, and weeping like fountains.” “She thought sometimes that, after all, this was the happiest time of her life-the honeymoon, as people called it. To taste the full sweetness of it, it would have been necessary doubtless to fly to those lands with sonorous names where the days after marriage are full of laziness most suave. In post-chaises behind blue silken curtains to ride slowly up steep roads, listening to the song of the postilion reechoed by the mountains, along with the bells of goats and the muffled sound of a waterfall; at sunset on the shores of gulfs to breathe in the perfume of lemon trees; then in the evening on the villa terraces above, hand in hand to look at the stars, making plans for the future. It seemed to her that certain places on earth must bring forth happiness, as a plant peculiar to the soil that cannot thrive elsewhere. Why could not she lean over balconies in Swiss chalets, or enshrine her melancholy in a Scotch cottage, with a husband dressed in a black velvet coat with long tails, and thin shoes, a pointed hat and frills?”
She lives in the countryside before she gets married, and she hates the boring days. Perhaps the disturbance caused by the presence of Monsieur Bovary has sufficed to make her believe that she at last feels that wondrous passion which, till then, like a great bird with rose-colored wings, hung in the splendor of the skies of poesy; and now she can not think that the calm in which she lives is the happiness she has dreamed. So she changes the fade life by looking for a lover.
We always talk about the power of dream. We say that dream can be the light which leads us to the wonderland, the happy life, the unknown shore. Where there are dreams, there is progress. But Madame Bovary’s dream is horrible. It leads her to death. Her dream is not practical. It is impossible to have the kind of life she dreams of, as the princess only lives in the fairy tale. To have a dream is wonderful, but to wallow in one’s dream is dangerous, like Madame Bovary. There is an old saying : the more you hope, the more disappointed you get. Once you wallow in you dream, you will be hurt painfully if your dream cannot come true.
So ,friends, keep your minds clear and never be lost in your dream.
Learning isones own business, which cannnot reil on others. As we konw, learning is of accumulating knowledge. It is ones life-long task ,which cannot be accmplished in one move.A successful learner is an independent one,who has both an indomitable will and amazing endurance. He will try to discover his own way of learning.Instead of waiting for the teachers heip.he will make efforts to create favorable conditiones o his own initiative. It will cerainly be of great help,if there is good environment, sufficient books and equipment,as wellas instructions form teachers and beneficial friends. But even if one has got all there favorable conditions, one cannot be sure to succeed in learning.
So the most important factor in learning consists in ones own effort. To learn is rather a painstaking and persevering business. Many a man is a failure because he cannot hear such indispensable hardships.Unremitting efforts can compensate foe lack of talents and thus enable one to get considerable progress in learning.

Just how important is school nowadays? Teachers often complain that homework is not done well and that students are often arriving at school delayed and yawning through lack of sleep.
There are, it seems, two main explanations for this. Firstly, many young children stay up late to watch TV programmes suitable for them, which may finish as late as 8:00. No child wants to admit
not having seen what everybody else has.
Secondly, a growing number of older children, particularly those approaching school-leaving age are taking up parttime evening or weekend work. They feel that working experience, not academic qualification will help them find jobs on leaving school. One can sympathize with both groups of children but it doesn't make a teacher's life any easier.

Weekend Homework
There should be no more weekend homework for us students. Six days devoted to school are enough for us modern students, who have many other interests. With homework to do on Sundays, when can we find time to help around the house, join in a football or baseball game or see a good film, or just have a rest? Because of all these other activities, weekend homework is usually put off until Sunday night. As a resuit, it is often done so poorly that on Mondays teachers always scold the whole class who have little idea of what the learned lessons are about. If there were no homework for the weekends, students would go to school on Mondays well rested and be willing to study.
Dear teachers, don't you agree with us?
In my opinion, both success and failure are parts of our life. Without success, we won’t know how to make us succeed. And without success, we won’t know what is failure, and even not know what’s the feeling of it.Everyone knows that failure is the mother of success. We will not always succeed in doing everything, on the contrary, we often have to face failure. At this time, we should face it bravely ,because it is possible for us to fail in our daily life.In other words, failure gives us some experience. It is the stair of making us improvement. If we can treat the failure in the correct way, our obtaining the success will be on its way to becoming reality. It is said that getting success is not an easy thing. You must work hard persistently if you want to get the feeling of success. If we know how to deal with failure and success, we will have a wonderful life. But the most important thing we should do is that we should make full use of our precious time and work hard.
The Remembrance of Lilacs
the family had just moved to rhode island, and the young woman was feeling a little melancholy on that sunday in may. after all, it was mother's day -- and 800 miles separated her from her parents in ohio.
she had called her mother that morning to wish her a happy mother's day, and her mother had mentioned how colorful the yard was now that spring had arrived. as they talked, the younger woman could almost smell the tantalizing aroma of purple lilacs hanging on the big bush outside her parents'back door.
later, when she mentioned to her husband how she missed those lilacs, he popped up from his chair. "i know where we can find you all you want, "he said. "get the kids and c'mon. "
so off they went, driving the country roads of northern rhode island on the kind of day only mid-may can produce:sparkling sunshine, unclouded azure skies and vibrant newness of the green growing all around. they went past small villages and burgeoning housing developments, past abandoned apple orchards, back to where trees and brush have devoured old homesteads.
where they stopped, dense thickets of cedars and ju nipers and birch crowded the roadway on both sides. there wasn't a lilac bush in sight.
"come with me , "the man said. "over that hill is an old cellar hole, from somebody's farm of years ago, and there are lilacs all round it. the man who owns this land said i could poke around here anytime. i'm sure he won't mind if we pick a few lilacs. "
before they got halfway up the hill, the fragrance of the lilacs drifted down to them, and the kids started running. soon, the mother began running, too, until she reached the top.
there, far from view of passing motorists and hidden from encroaching civilization, were the towering lilacs bushes, so laden with the huge, cone-shaped flower clusters that they almost bent double. with a smile, the young woman rushed up to the nearest bush and buried her face in the flowers, drinking in the fragrance and the memories it recalled.
while the man examined the cellar hole and tried to explain to the children what the house must have looked like, the woman drifted among the lilacs. carefully, she chose a sprig here, another one there, and clipped them with her husband's pocket knife. she was in no hurry, relishing each blossom as a rare and delicate treasure.
finally, though, they returned to their car for the trip home. while the kids chattered and the man drove, the woman sat smiling, surrounded by her flowers, a faraway look in her eyes.
when they were within three miles of home, she suddenly shouted to her husband, "stop the car. stop right here!"
the man slammed on the brakes. before he could ask her why she wanted to stop, the woman was out of the car and hurrying up a nearby grassy slope with the lilacs still in her arms. at the top of the hill was a nursing home and, because it was such a beautiful spring day, the patients were outdoors strolling with relatives or sitting on the porch.
the young woman went to the end of the porch, where an elderly patient was sitting in her wheelchair, alone, head bowed, her back to most of the others. across the porch railing went the flowers, in to the lap of the old woman. she lifted her head, and smiled. for a few moments, the two women chatted, both aglow with happiness, and then the young woman turned and ran back to her family. as the car pulled away, the woman in the wheelchair waved, and clutched the lilacs.
"mom, "the kids asked, "who was that?why did you give her our flowers?is she somebody's mother?"the mother said she didn't know the old woman. but it was mother's day, and she seemed so alone, and who wouldn't be cheered by flowers?"besides, "she added, "i have all of you, and i still have my mother, even if she is far away. that woman needed those flowers more than i did. "
this satisfied the kids, but not the husband. the next day he purchased half a dozen young lilacs bushes and planted them around their yard, and several times since then he has added more.
i was that man. the young mother was, and is, my wife. now, every may, our own yard is redolent with lilacs. every mother's day our kids gather purple bouquets. and every year i remember that smile on a lonely old woman's face, and the kindness that put the smile there.
